How Often Should I Submit My Web Site?
First, let’s talk about why you should even have to resubmit your site at all. It would seem that if you submitted your site and got into the search engines and directories that should be enough. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Directories: Most directories are setup to keep just the freshest submissions in their databases. That’s why for directories, monthly or quartelry submissions are recommended (the exception is Yahoo!).
Search Engines: On the other hand, Search Engines try to keep your site for a longer period of time. But, even then we see web sites dropping from them at an alarming rate. There are many reasons for this to happen from spider timeouts, to your hosting server not being available at the time of spidering, to even a sloppy database file rebuild on the part of the Search Engine. Lets just suffice it to say that if you depend on your web site for revenue generation and the Search Engines to keep your site indexed without monthly resubmissions, you are heading to disaster and www.ican'tfindmysite.com problems.
Now to the question, how often to submit? There are a diverse number of opinions on this subject. We have found the optimum time to be Monthly.
How Do I Know I’ve Been Submitted?
Every time that we submit your site, we have a written confirmation of that process and a copy of the data that we have on file for your submissions. We include this to you so you can remember in the future what you have in our files and if you want to update it, just send us an email describing the changes required. This does not include your own web site’s meta tag programming or content. That is a separate issue that is handled by your programmer or by us for a fee.
Search Engines VS Directories
Search engines, such as HotBot, create their listings automatically. Search engines crawl the web, then people search through what they have found.
If you change your web pages, search engines eventually find these changes, and that can affect how you are listed. Page titles, body copy and other elements all play a role.
A directory such as Yahoo depends on humans for its listings. You submit a short description to the directory for your entire site, or editors write one for sites they review. A search looks for matches only in the descriptions submitted.
Changing your web pages has no effect on your listing. Things that are useful for improving a listing with a search engine have nothing to do with improving a listing in a directory. The only exception is that a good site, with good content, might be more likely to get reviewed than a poor site.
How Do Search Engines Rank Your Site?
When you search for a topic using a search engine you will almost instantly, sort through millions of pages that it has in its database and present you with the ones that best match your search topic. The results will be listed with what it considers to be the best match for your search being listed first.
They don’t always get it right. Sometimes pages that don’t relate to your search make it through, and sometimes it may take a little work to find what you are looking for.
Search engines follow a set of rules, to determine which pages best match your search with the main rules being related to the location and frequency of keywords on the web page. It is often referred to as the location and frequency method. KEYWORD RICH, DESCRIPTIVE CONTENT IS YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENT!
Most search engines will place a heavy amount of emphasis on what is stated in the TITLE tag of your web page. If you are looking for Hawaiian Vacations, the search engine will first look at sites Hawaiian Vacations listed in the Title Tag as there is an assumption being made that those pages will best relate to your requested search.
Search engines will also check to see if your search words appear near the top of a web page, such as in the headline or in the first few paragraphs of text. They go under the assumption that any page relevant to the topic will mention those words right from the beginning.
How often a keyword or key phrase is mentioned in the web page is another major factor in how search engines determine relevancy. A search engine will analyze how often keywords appear in relation to other words in a web page. Those with a higher frequency are often considered more relevant than other web pages.
Now its time to qualify the location/frequency method described above. All the major search engines follow it to a point but each search engine operates a little differently from the others. That’s why different search engines return different results for the exact same search.
To begin with, some search engines index more web pages than others. Some search engines also index web pages more often than others. The result is that no search engine has the exact same collection of web pages to search through.
Meta tags are often thought to be the “magic” behind being placed hi in the search engines. HotBot and Infoseek do give some small advantage to web pages that use keywords in their meta tags. But then others like Lycos don’t even read them at all. You have probably seen examples where pages that don’t have any meta tags still obtain a high position in the search engine. Remember, they are part of the overall solution to placement but they are NOT the only answers.
