BPL Q&A

Q:  What is Broadband over Power Lines?
A:  BPL is the latest in high speed Internet access technology, delivering high speed Internet over the existing power lines at speeds of 10-30 times faster than a Dial-up modem can provide. BPL technology from IVNET allows users to access the internet from any electrical outlet in their home or office.

Q: Is IVNET BPL available in all areas?
A:  As of January 1, 2014 we are no longer offering BPL service to new customers.

Q: What is the difference between BPL, cable and DSL?
A: The difference between the three high speed Internet services are how you, the user, connects to the Internet. DSL uses the phone lines but it is distance sensitive from the telephone office to your location. The further away you are, the less the quality of signal and speed available. You must also have an active phone line. Cable modems use the existing Cable TV lines to deliver its broadband service. Availability is to limited areas and the service is a shared connection, thus speeds can slow down when a lot of people in the same neighborhood are using the same line. IVNet BPL uses the electrical lines and does not require the customer to have Cable or telephone service. Installation is simple because you only need to plug the modem into an electrical outlet.

Q: How Fast is IVNET BPL?
A:  Residential BPL is currently 10-30 times faster than a Dial-Up Connection. Commercial service is up to 40 times faster than a Dial-up Connection.

Q: Do I need to have a phone line or Cable TV to get IVNET BPL?
A: No, IVNET BPL works through your existing electrical wiring in your home or office. This means that no additional wiring is required to receive IVNET BPL.

Q: Can I talk on the phone and use IVNET BPL at the same time?
A:  Yes, you can talk on your phone and use IVNET BPL at the same time. With BPL, your phone line is completely separate from your internet.

Q: Is my monthly IVNET BPL service charge included on my utility bill?
A: No, your credit/debit card will be charged automatically every month.

Q: Does the City of Princeton benefit from IVNET BPL?
A:  Yes, IVNET BPL allows the City Electrical Department the capabilities of Transformer Outage Notification, Automated Meter Reading, Electrical Monitoring, and Electrical Management Services. Plus, the utility receives a revenue share of the monthly subscription fees.

Q: Do I have to get a modem from IVNET to use BPL?
A:  Yes, only broadband modems from an authorized IVNet retail location or Princeton City Hall will work on our system.  There is no charge for the modem.  If services are terminated, you must return the modem.  If the modem is not returned you will be charged $199.00.

Q: What are the monthly fees involved in using residential IVNet BPL?
